Montréal
Montréal was one of the first French settlements established in the New World, and it has grown to be the second largest city in Canada. This bustling metropolis is an exciting, living, beautiful place for locals and visitors alike. No matter whether your interests lie in romance or history, fine arts or shopping, visiting nightclubs or family-friendly amusement parks… Montreal is a city that truly has something for everyone.
One place that can't be missed is the region of Old Montreal. This area, with its cobbled streets and beautifully maintained and preserved facades, is like a little piece of Europe. Take a walking tour, ride in a horse-drawn calèche, or visit one of the many attractions located in this part of town: the Old Port, City Hall and the Notre-Dame de Montréal Basilica are all within a short walking distance.
If you would like to get some shopping done, the best place to visit is St. Catherine Street. This road is home to many high-end boutiques including several that are unique to Montréal. After the shops close, head out to one of Montreal's many bustling nightclubs and party until dawn!
If you're interested in museums, try visiting the Biodome. The Montreal Biodome was built as a velodrome for the 1976 Olympics. It has been divided into four different ecosystems: Tropical Forest, Laurentian Forest, Saint Lawrence Marine Eco-system (modeled on the nearby Gulf of Saint Lawrence), and Polar region. Each area contains native plants and animals from each of these regions. If you're more interested in plants than animals, there are plenty of beautiful flowers to be seen in the Montreal Botanical Garden.
If your visit falls in the month of July, you can't miss the Just for Laughs festival. This famous comedy festival is the largest of its kind in the whole world. All throughout the festival, you can see top-notch stand-up comics performing on stage, street performers and buskers on the streets, and celebrities in attendance. These performances have been recorded and featured in TV shows on CBC television and The Comedy Network.
Another world-famous act from Montreal is the astounding Cirque du Soleil. All of the Cirque's travelling shows debut in their hometown. This year's premiere is Totem; running from April 22 to July 11. Each show features jugglers, acrobats, dancers and more- put together it makes a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed!
Finally, before you leave, don't forget to have a smoked meat sandwich or a Montreal-style bagel. If this is your first visit to Quebec, you may want to try poutine, as well. Yum!
